So, in an attempt to get away from the computer, I made all these lovelies within the past 2 days! I am so excited about them all.

FYI - from Wikipedia:

"Mele Kalikimaka is a Christmas song sung as a warm greeting from Hawaii. The song takes its title from the phrase of "Mele Kalikimaka," the Hawaiianized pronunciation of "Merry Christmas." The Hawaiian language does not include all the sounds found in the English language (notably the letter R). Thus the familiar English phrase of "Merry Christmas" when pronounced using Hawaiian language syllables becomes "Mele Kalikimaka" (note the substitution of L's for R's). "Mele Kalikimaka" is therefore not Hawaiian for "Merry Christmas," but simply a Hawaiian transliteration."

Don't Mess With Barbie

Found the following artile on Yahoo! Buzz http://buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/92080

"Let's get something straight — Barbie may look like a bombshell, but she's no pushover. Mattel, the makers of the iconic doll, recently won a prolonged legal battle with MGA, the manufacturers of Bratz. The outcome of the legal battle puts into question the future of the creepy-looking Bratz figures. A federal court ruled that MGA was to be banned from making and selling "the saucy Barbie alternative." Why? Apparently, the court found that the creator of Bratz came up with the idea while working for Mattel. Hence, the idea belongs to the house that Barbie built."

Although, I never did really like Bratz dolls anyway. It's like Barbie and Blythe had an ugly love child! LOL

Flickr Sent Me a Warning

EWW! Flickr sent me a warning today that I am selling stuff through my account! Yeah - me and, like a million other flickr users too!

I had no direct linking under my items. The most I ever did was type "see my profile for details", "cleaning house" or "sold". Some items were tagged with "Shoeflower, "Reyney" and "Etsy" So much for that.

But they better open their eyes, and see that everyone's doing it! LOL Well, not everyone, but a lot. I mean what are all the "Etsy" groups for?? Just to look and appreciated each other's work, right? Excuse the sarcasm.

This is a bad mood morning! Thank God I have Tuesday off!

Plastic Bag Crochet

Plastic Bag Crochet
Originally uploaded by Reyney
Long before Etsy, and long before I made jewelry I would crochet everyday, every moment, every time I possibly could!

I used to make bags out of grocery bags. I was addicted to making them. I would probably make a new bag every two days. I gave most of them away, and sold a few on Etsy.

Now I only make them for people who request them. They usually wind up waiting 6 months...LOL My latest is for a teacher I work with. She is giving it to her 11 year old niece for her birthday.

It came out so sweet. The gray bags are Pathmark bags. The white is a mix - mostly from Michael's, AC Moore and Pathmark. The green is a Barnes and Noble bag. The pink is a random bag I saved, because I knew I would need it someday. Approximately 50 bags went into the making of this bag.

This beautiful bag will not decompose for the next 300 years!

Sharing with you!

Pretty Plushies - Everyone Squeeze in the Photo

So, what happens when I get sick? I make the most plushies I have ever made.

I still feel like crap. I still want to sleep all day. But, for some reason my plushie crafting has been at an all time high.

Here's a pic of all in my collection right now. Some are for sale. Some have already sold. Prices range from about $6 to $12.

I should get sick more often, not!

Home Sick

I am home sick today. Now, I know I am the first person who cannnot wait for holidays, days off, etc, but I'm feeling really guilty that I called out sick this morning! I don't get it....

Even though I was up all night, coughing, sneezing and trying to get that tickle out of my ears, I still feel the need to be at work. The last time I looked at the clock it was 3, and then my alarm went off at 6! Oh boy was my head spinning.

Not to mention the achy body, conjestion in my head, sore throat, cold sore forming on my lip, ewww, blah, blah, blah, I'm missing work! I hate to miss work!

I've missed 4 days in the past 5 years - and I can name each and every one! I was sick, I had to go to a museum, Bill's graduation and I broke my finger! And now this!

But I keep telling myself it's best that I don't spread these germs to my little kiddies, even though, I'm sure, one of them sneezed in my face last week, and well, here I am!

Kiss the Summer Goodbye

Well - after a lovely two months off I must return back to work tomorrow! As most of you know, I am an art and music teacher in an elementary school on Staten Island. I service all the grades, K-5 and the special ed classes.

Even though I am starting my 6th year, I always get nervous about the first day of school. It's almost as if I am one of the students - nervous to see friends again, who's in my class and the horrible question - who will I have to sit next to??? Hopefully not the annoying boy who picks his nose!

As a teacher, I never know what to expect. What is the new kindergarten like? (I had a lot of criers last year! What will my schedule be like? What duties will I have to do!?

This fifth grade is a very special one for me. When I started at my school - they were in the kindergarten. So, they are the first class that I have watched grow for the past 5 years. So exciting!

Now, I've prepared my lessons for the week all day. I've brushed up on my piano playing because I haven't played all summer. I've made my lunch. I've ironed my clothes. I know exaclty what I am doing tomorrow - yet still have those butterflies. And I know I will never fall asleep!

But tomorrow will come and go - and I will be happy to see all those little boogers and patooties again!

Hugs,
Renee

Seven Days Working Dolls - Somebody Pinch Me Now

I just have to write a quick blog about my greatest Ebay find ever!

I found these little dollies on Ebay on Wednesday night.

The seller had the cover of the box as the first pic, so you didn't see these little lovelies at first glance. Big mistake!

I clicked on the listing to wee what was inside. I nearly lost my mind.

They were asking $19.99 as the first bid. I immediately bid and then sent the seller a note if they would accept a "buy it now".

No reply!

They were ending Friday night at 8:00 - so of course I sat in front of the computer for an hour!

I can't even tell you how high my bid was. I even upped it at the last second. I considered using a sniping service, but I didn't want to pay the fee and give them my password.

The rest is history - I paid about $30 with shipping and they arrived this morning!

I'm still waiting to wake up from these dream...

My Purple Thumb!

My Purple Thumb!
Originally uploaded by Reyney
Last Sunday were the playoffs for my softball team. I foul-tipped a ball off my right thumb. It was swollen, and purple, and painful, and yucky! But we did win the game!

I had to visit my hand doc today for my last check up on my left index finger anyway (which I broke way back of February 29th!) It's ok - still feels a little kooky, but because I crushed all the nerves, it's going to take a long time to feel normal.

So, I figured since I was there - I might as well see how my thumb is. After my $35 x-ray and visit co-pay, I learned that it is not broken! YAY! Just have to ice it and take some painkillers.

But it hurts...

So no sewing or crocheting or nice neat handwriting from me for a while...

Dear Ebay Sellers,

Dear Ebay sellers,

Please stop having to go out of town unexpectedly when you're supposed to be shipping my purchases.

Thank you!

This is so frustrating! Within two days - I've received the following notes from sellers:

"I'm sorry but I had to go out of town for a death in the family for 4 days, .. I hope to get it out tomorrow. I'll email you when I've hit the post office. Sincerely, Lisa"

"Hi again Renee...I am so sorry I had an emergency and had to leave town before this ended. I will send priority in the morn. Thanks again!!"

PLUS - I had to contact the first seller - because it was a week after my payment and I hadn't heard anything!

I HATE THIS! What is the problem? Maybe the fact they all live in TOWNS???

So, I placed an Alchemy order on Etsy. (Alchemy is a part of Etsy that allows you to order something that you would like to be made).

4 votes for green at 44%
1 vote for blue at 11%
2 votes for purple at 22%
1 vote for brown at 11%

They add up to 99% ???

I voted for green. I think that will be the color of my bridesmatrons.

To answer my question from last week. Most of my students love the color blue. I can never have enough blue construction paper to go around.

Decided to update the appearance of my blog today. Not a lot of changes were made, but I separated my links category. There's one section for blogs that I look at often. The other section is for some online shops that I adore! Please check them out and if you're a friend who wants your blog added - just let me know!

I'va also added a fun survey over there ---> to the right. What is your favorite color? Just curious. The survey is open for one week. Most of my students also ask for one specific color construction paper all the time- there's never enough of this color? Any guesses?? Tell you later!

How To Have A Successful Shop On Etsy

Well, since I cannot sleep I'm going to write about Etsy.

Not only do I sell on Etsy, http://www.reyney.etsy.com/, http://www.shoeflower.etsy.com/, but I am also extremely addicted to buying on Etsy. Not to toot my own horn, but I've found that most sellers are not like me:

I've purchased a lot of items lately where I have received ZERO contact from the seller. Not an email. Not a convo. Not even a paypal tracking confirmation. I do not like this. I don't care how busy you are in real life, you need to send me something to let me know that you have received my payment, let me know when my item has shipped and when I can expect it. Personalization means everything, even if it is a cut and paste email, trust me, it will make the customer feel a lot better.

Sellers have contacted me in the past about mentoring info. Here's what I say to them:

First of all, selling on Etsy has to be fun! It's the spirit of the entire website!

Pictures need to be clear. Show fronts and backs of objects. Pick nice colored/patterned/contrasting backgrounds. I really don't want to see your TV set in the pic. Make it professional. You don't need a great camera or a light box for that matter. I use the sunlight in my window and the macros option. It enables you to take pictures of things close up.
Sometimes I include a penny in the photo or a ruler in the photos for measurement purposes. I've had a few requests to see pics of someone wearing the jewelry.

List often. If you have a lot of things to post, you must spread them out. Especially in the jewelry category. If you post everything at once, they will get burried immediately. Trust me! Spread it out during the day and during the week. I find that sales occur after I just listed something. Listing makes your store visible. I find that I have a lot of sales on Thursdays. I don not know why. I also find that I have sales when I wake up in the morning. I don't know why.

Descriptions need not be a book. I LIST the basics. Color, measurements, etc. Paragraphs are long and boring to read when you are trying to sell something. But please don't forget to list how big something is.

When something sells, I respond with an email thanking them for their purchase and to let them know when their item will ship. I ship USA orders the next day 99% of the time. I ship international orders once a week because the lines at the post office are almost unbearable after a long day at my real job.

I wrap my goodies in bubble wrap and tissue paper. I fill the jewelry bag with sequins. I decorate the packages with stickers. I include a freebie in all of my orders. I use pretty deco tape on the outside of my packages. I decorate all my packages with pretty stamps.

I include a little thank you note.

I sometimes include coupons for future purchases. 10%, off, free shipping, free surprise necklace, etc.

I include business cards. They're practically free at http://www.vistaprint.com/

I keep up with my feedback.

I do my best to make everyone happy.

I have fun!

Ikea Detolf Cabinets - Vintage Doll Collection

Well - my collection has been getting out of hand. I'm almost slightly embarrassed at how many of them I have. I'm not really into the clutter, but I'm just not ready to party with many of them.

I bought two of these glass cabinets from Ikea yesterday. I like how Gretchen's dolls of Shop66 look in them. They're called detolf and they were $60 each. Definitely needed Bill to carry them up the stairs.

I've put together lot's and lot's of Ikea furniture on my own, and these were the biggest pain in the ass ever. Bill HAD to help.

And since I live in a very old house, with very crooked floors and walls, they're slighlty crooked as well. I just hope they don't fall on me!

BUT the dolls look great in them!

It's not that I suck at softball, because in fact I used to be very good. I can hit that ball. I can hit that ball to third base. I can catch. I can run. BUT I guess we need to change "I CAN" to "I USED TO". Argh! I can hit the ball in the batting cages. Just give me a real live team, and well, I suck.

So, let me make my jewelry and be happy. I am very proud of my Etsy shop and how well I have done in the past two years. Honestly, I think the shop sells itself. As a full time teacher, I really don't have much time to promote. All I have is a myspace account for the shop (which I rarely check) and my flickr account and my Vista Print business cards.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me in the past two years. My first sale was on June 2, 2006 to my dear friend Dana. My first REAL "non-friend" sale was on July 2, 2006.

So, it's just about two years that By Renee has been running! Please keep checking back all summer long - lot's of goodies goodies goodies on the way.

Hugs to you all! Especially Danielle - because she's on my softball team, and is probably my only "real-life" friend who reads this! LOL

What did I buy at the Renegade Craft Fair?

Well - I always get very excited this time of year - because I get to go to the Renegade Craft Fair in Williamsburg.

Unfortunately it took us over an hour just to get on the BQE, so we weren't in the best of spirits.

It was hoooottttttt and crowded, but I made the best of it.

I bought four things for myself and a t-shirt for Bill.

1. Print by Swallowfield
2. Felt ornament by Cherry Box
3. Vintage craft straw from Cathy of California
3. Soap sampler from Biggs and Featherbelle

I wish it were more than once a year. I wish it were in May so it wouldn't be that hottttttt.

Please say hello to my Pretty Bunka Gal. She's still awaiting a name.

Since these dollies are so hard to get my hands on, and I love them so so so much, I decided to make my own.

Now, of course she's a little different than the traditional bunka, but I love her just the same.

A little bit of felt, stuffing, and some vintage lace! (c;

Brown kraft tags are from barnridgeblessings on Ebay.
Stamp was made by www.terbearco.etsy.com
Vintage wedding image from www.CandyConnection22.etsy.com
Scrapping paper, ribbon and stamps were from Michael's on Staten Island.

Yay! I am so proud of myself. It was probably cheaper to order them somewhere - but this is so much fun!

They're about 6 inches long or so, and will fit into a regular envelope, I hope!

Recycled Crayons - Gifts for my students

As an art teacher, I ended up with lot's of little crayon bits and bobs this year. And from experience, I've learned that children do not like to use these. There's nothing like a brand new crayon with that beautiful point. They Crayola sharpner helps bring them back to life, but it's still never the same.

I purchased two mini muffin pans on ebay and baked them away! One is in ther shape of stars and the other just has circles.

I put them in little baggies with some sequins and added a label. I'm going to give them to all the students on their birthdays! Yay!

New Finds - All On The Way

The above dollies are Ebay finds.

6 vintage chenille ornaments found on http://www.carriejoelle.etsy.com/

I'm starting to plan my wedding - so I'm buying as much as I can now. Does that make any sense??? I'm sure there's some logic behind it! (c;
BTW - My finger is pretty much the same. It's still very tingly and I have not done any guitar playing. My piano playing seems ok for 9 fingers, but I lost my voice yesterday and today! So no singing either for me! (I teach art and music - so lot's of this is important to me) Fire me now!
